Description

Polypedilum (Polypedilum) inaijeum (Sasa, Kitami et Suzuki) comb. n.

Pentapedilum inaijeum Sasa, Kitami et Suzuki, 2001: 8.

Material examined. JAPAN: Fukushima Prefecture, Inawashiro, shore of Lake Inawashiro, holotype male, 20.ix.2001, light trap, K. Kitami (NMST no 397: 62, # 13-2).

Diagnostic characters. The male differs from all other known members within the subgenus by having one large and one minute inner basal seta on the superior volsella. The superior volsella has a broad microtrichiose base and a small strongly curved, sickle-shaped, apical projection. The gonostylus and the inferior volsella are long and slender, while the anal point is short.

Male (n = 1)

Wing length 1.77 mm. Wing length / length of profemur 2.21. Thorax brown; abdomen yellowish brown; femur, tibia, and tarsi yellowish brown.

Head. AR 1.74. Ultimate flagellomere 969 µm long. Temporal setae 10 including 5 inner verticals, 4 outer verticals, and 1 postorbital. Clypeus with 19 setae. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 35, 51, 105, 110, 189. Fifth palpomere / third palpomere 1.80.

Thorax. Acrostichals 13, dorsocentrals 13, prealars 5. Scutellum with 22 setae.

Wing. Anal lobe well developed. VR 1.19. Brachiolum with 1 seta, R with 22, R 1 with 14, R 4+5 with 31, M 3+4 with 14, Cu with 1, PCu with 10; other veins bare. Wing membrane bare. Squama with 8 setae.

Legs. Scale on foretibia 47 µm long. Spurs on midtibia 58 µm long; on hind tibia 61 µm long. Comb on midtibia 28 µm long; combs on hind tibia 31 µm and 29 µm long. Width at apex of foretibia 63 µm; of midtibia 58 µm; of hind tibia 72 µm. Length and proportions of legs as in Table 61.

Hypopygium. Tergite IX not discernible, laterosternite IX with 3 setae. Anal point 37 µm long, 12 µm wide at base, nearly parallel-sided towards 5 µm wide apex. Transverse sternapodeme 35 µm long; phallapodeme 75 µm long. Gonocoxite 172 µm long. Superior volsella 68 µm long, with 1 lateral seta close to microtrichiose base and 1 large and 1 minute inner setae. Inferior volsella 124 µm long, nearly parallel-sided, with 1 prominent apical seta. Gonostylus 143 µm long. HR 1.20.

Remarks. The illustration in Sasa et al. (2001) shows only the large inner seta on the base of the superior volsella.

Distribution. Known only from Japan.
