Brochymena carolinensis (Westwood, 1837)

Distribution: United States: AL, AR, CT, DC, FL, GA, IN, KS (Popenoe 1885, Larivière 1992; but see comments below), LA (Larivière 1992), MA, MD, MO, MS (Larivière 1992), NC, NH (Larivière 1992, Roch 2020), NJ, NY, OH, PA, SC (Uhler 1871, Stål 1872, Larivière 1992), TX, VA (Fabricius 1775, 1781, 1794, 1803; Larivière 1992).

Comments: Packauskas (2012) stated that the Eagleton, Kansas record given by Larivière (1992) for this species should be referred to Eagleton, Oklahoma (he stated that there is no town in Kansas by that name). On the other hand, Popenoe (1885) previously recorded this species from Kansas, which is well within the known distribution for this species, so there is no reason to doubt that this species might occur in Kansas. The record of this species, as Brochymena annulata (Fabricius) from Minnesota (Lugger 1900) is clearly a misdetermination and should be referred to Brochymena quadripustulata. It should be noted that Brochymena annulata is a homonym, but still many early records of this species are under Brochymena annulata. On the other hand, similar to the Minnesota record above, many early records of Brochymena annulata are misdeterminations and should be transferred to Brochymena quadripustulata.
