In the period of the old Russia the Slavic-Muslim relations were limited to minimum in spite of a two centuries long dependency from the Golden Horde. The Russian conquest during the imperial period changed this situation. Particularly important was the conquest of the Northern Caucasus, which resulted in over two hundred thousand victims among the Russian forces in the first half of the nineteenth century. Russian domination over Central Asia a few dozen years later was smoother, but not without some misunderstandings. Despite the tensions in the region, in the second half of the century some doctrines were created which encouraged a further expansion and stressed the connection with Asian nations (Panasiatism, Eurasiatism), as opposed to the West seen as a cultural antipode. After the collapse of USSR the situation has significantly changed: the codition of ethnic Russians living in the Caucasus has worsened due to xenophobia and religious fundamentalism of the native inhabitants of these territories. In addition, the Russians have lost their privileged economic position. Also in the native Russia, as the result of the activity of the Caucasian economic circles and the mass immigration of the illegal working force from Asia, the antipathy towards Europe has diminished and the animosity towards the growing Muslim community in Russia has increased, in spite of the ideology of Neo-Eurasiatism and the policy of the central government.
