Rhinolophus aurantius Gray 1845

Description

Rhinolophus aurantius Gray, 1845

Gray, J.E. (1845) Description of some new Australian animals. p. 405 [405–411] in Eyre, E.J. (1845) (ed.) Journals of Expeditions of Discovery into Central Australia, and Overland from Adelaide to King George's Sound, in the Years 1840-1. London. T. & W. Boone Vol. 1

Valid name: Rhinonicteris aurantia (Gray, 1845)

Presumably Syntype: ZMB 3983, body in alcohol, skull extracted, male; Port Essington, N-Australia; presumably collected by Sibbald, donated by Gray, ex BMNH.

Comment: In the general catalogue ZMB 3983 is marked with a type * by Peters and annotated as “Ex. orig. [original specimen] Rhinolophus aurantius Gray ”. Further syntypes are in the RMNH and MNHN, and an assumed holotype is in the BMNH (1845.5.13.3). However, Gray did not designate a holotype; instead, the description by Gray (1845: 405) is based on several specimens, at least one male and one female.
