Description

An annotated list is presented of the species of land Mollusca of the Arquipélago das Berlengas off the west coast of Portugal, based on new fieldwork and critical reviews of museum specimens and literature. For Berlenga Grande we accept records of 14 species (discounting Cornu aspersum), two of which are newly reported here (Truncatellina callicratis, Vitrea contracta). The only other island on which land snails are known is Farilhão Grande, with three species confirmed, all of which are also known from Berlenga Grande. Of these, Oestophora barrelsi is an endemic species occurring on both islands; new data on its DNA sequences and genital anatomy demonstrate a close relationship to O. barbula and O. barbella. Whether taxonomic separation is appropriate for different shell morphotypes of Xeroplexa olisippensis s.l. on each island is still to be decided by ongoing research. All records of nine other species are dismissed as due to misidentifications
