Type locality. Gulf of Panama, 07°32.007’N, 078°36.30’W, “Albatross" expedition stn 3396, 474 m depth (Faxon 1893).

Distributional range. Gulf of Panama and now from Chile ..

Bathymetric range. 155– 474 m.

New records. MUAP (CD)-0175, 1 male cl 21.20 mm, off Arica, stn E-18 (18°25’S, 70°45’W, 390 m), “ PNUD ” survey; CZUCN, 1 male cl 21.44 mm, stn Z3 (33°15.48’S, 71°52.49’W, 323 m), FIP 2005-61 project (site is near a recently discovered methane seep site; J. Sellanes unpublished data).

Description. Rostrum straight, styliform with dorsal keel (Fig. 10 a). Carapace subrectangular, covered by scale-like tubercles, ending in minute apical spine surrounded by row of setae; carapace surface flat, regions and grooves poorly developed (Fig. 10 b). Eyes with spine overreaching cornea and tubercle on inner side. Abdominal somites unarmed, without keels or grooves (Fig. 10 c). Cheliped longer than carapace, armed on dorsal and ventral margins, spines better developed on dorsal face; dactyl almost half length of palm (Fig. 10 d). Walking legs longer than carapace, armed dorsally with row of spines (Fig. 10 e); merus and carpus with mesial row of spines; ventral margin of dactyl unarmed. More robust cheliped observed in adult males (Fig. 10 f, g).

Remarks. Munidopsis tanneri is closely related to M. scabra Faxon, 1893. The two species are clearly differentiated by the flattened dorsal carapace and long antennal spine in M. tanneri. Munidopsis scabra has been recorded off Peru (11°50'S, 77°58'W) (Garth & Haig 1971). This new record extends the range by more than 4000 km southward.
