Description

The purpose of the present study is to enumerate the
extent, and analyze the causes and consequences of the prevailing
rural poverty; and the way to get out of it. The study aims to accord
both theoretical and empirical treatments to the issue of rural poverty.
Especially. diverge theories of development and underdevelopment
have been critically examined. An attempt has been made to examine
the relevancy of different approaches so far as they relate to the
alleviation of rural poverty in Bangladesh. It has been argued that all
the approaches have some merits as well as limitations in explaining
the rural poverty and suggesting the way out. The study is entirely
based upon available secondary data. Empirical treatments have been
based upon the findings of different studies carried out in Bangladesh.
Specifically, the analysis of poverty trend project covering 62 villages
conducted by the Bangladesh Institute of Development studies
(BIDS) in 1989-90 has been heavily relied upon.
