Description

In this deliverable the results of case study 3 " Strategic development of Pan-European network" are described.

The general objective of plan4res is to fill the gaps between the increasing complexity of the future energy system planning and operational problems and the currently available system analysis tools. Enhanced end-to-end planning and operational tools dealing with technological and market uncertainty, emerging technologies and increased sector coupling of multi-energy vectors such as heat, cold and transport are assembled in a synergistic approach to support European system planners, operators, decision makers, regulators.
The modular nature of the tools allows them to be tailored to the specifc needs of different nature entities and can adapt to the wished (or data imposed) granularity. This is highlighted by a set of exemplary case studies. Each of these case studies focuses on a different viewpoint on the energy system and the methods and tools necessary to solve their use cases, questions and challenges. Those case studies show the adequacy and relevance of the developed tools and modeling framework and its interoperability.

The present case study is devoted to demonstrating that the Seasonal Storage Valuation and European unit Commitment Models are meeting the expectations. With this case study we show that:
- The models are able to evaluate the feasibility of a given long-term energy mix scenario, and to assess the costs of thos scenario from the point of view of the energy system. In cas Study 3 we demonstrated this on the specific case of one of the recently published openENTRANCE scenarios.
- With this models it is possible to run exibility assessment studies, in order to evaluate the value of a given kind of exibility. Within case study 3, we have shown examples of exibility evaluation related to storage, interconnections, and thermal generation

-  Finally we demonstrated that the models were able to capture the cost and value of hosting more Variable renewable Generation Systems in the electricity mix.
