Description

FIGURE 2. (a) Cumulative number of deep-water (>80 m depth) octocoral taxa off western and southern Australia and the north Tasman Sea at depths with linear trendlines fitted to the data; blue diamonds: reported in collections and in publications of museum materials since the first reported collection in 1803 (some species were reported more than once); red squares: all species collected on 6 biodiversity surveys between 1997 and 2008. (b) Species accumulation for the octocorals collected in 6 surveys between 1997 and 2008, broken down into described, new and uncertain species. Also shown is the number of species collected in each survey and the baseline of 135 deep-water species identified in the literature summarised in the historical account.
