Description

An apple tree (Malus domestica) flowering phenology data set from 1959 to 2019, observed in Pūre orchard, Latvia (Lat: 57.04; Lon: 22.90, WGS84 reference system) is provided (file name “1_Apple_Pure_phenology_tidy.csv”), including:

  1. Variety – local apple tree variety name (17 varieties)
  2. Type – type of variety one of “summer”, “autumn” or “winter”
  3. Year – year of observation
  4. Full_bloom – date of reported full bloom onset
  5. Full_bloom_yd – day of the year of the reported full bloom onset.

The data represent a digitized subset of large field book archive collected since 1930 in Pūre research orchard since early 20th century, currently integrated into Institute of Horticulture at the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies.

The full flowering phase was recorded when 80% all flowers are open examining the state of up to 5 trees for each cultivar. The observations are along a transect every two to three days by an experienced practitioner.

The data set is complemented with R-script (“2_Apple_Pure_phenology_R_script.r”) and R workspace image (“3_Apple_Pure_phenology_R_workspace_image.RData”) useful for replicating the analysis presented by Kalvāne et al. (2021; https://doi.org/10.5194/asr-1-1-2021).
