Testing gold leaves thickness calculations accuracy through Monte Carlo simulations and MA-XRF scanning

Description

With the goal of applying and testing the differential attenuation method to MA-XRF scans, a gilded sample of dimensions 91 x 72 mm2 was prepared and scanned with a custom, portable system. Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were performed with the XRMC package to replicate the sample digitally and assess the influence of the resin (glue) used to stick the gold foils in the thickness estimations of the gold foil itself. The simulations were also used to verify the matrix effects that occur within the imprimitura.
