Calcinus tibicen

Description

Calcinus tibicen (Herbst, 1791)

(Fig. 4A)

Cancer tibicen Herbst, 1791: 25, pl. 23, fig. 7.

Material examined. Brazil, São Paulo: 1 ♂, 2 ♀, CCDB 4303, Ubatuba, colls. F. Rosseti et al., 30.viii.1993; 1 ♂, CCDB 5341, Ubatuba, Ilha das Couves, colls. F. Mantelatto et al., 19.x.2012; 2 ♂, CCDB 769, Ubatuba, Praia Grande, 23°25ʹ20.03ʺS, 045°03ʹ42.61ʺW, coll. R. Biagi, 15.x.2001; 1 ♂, CCDB 778, Ubatuba, Praia Grande, 23°25ʹ20.03ʺS, 045°03ʹ42.61ʺW, coll. R. Biagi, 15.x.2001; 3 ♂, CCDB 331, Ubatuba, Praia Grande, 23°28ʹS, 045°03ʹW, coll. F. Mantelatto, 18.xi.2002; 2 ♂, CCDB 576, Ubatuba, Ilha Anchieta, 23°33ʹS, 045°05ʹW, colls. F. Mantelatto & R. Biagi, 01.x.1999; 3 ♀, CCDB 5287, Ubatuba, Ilha Vitória, colls. F. Mantelatto et al., 20.x.2012; 1 ♀, CCDB 4898, São Sebastião, Araçá, coll. R. Buranelli, 10.ix.2013; 1 ♀, CCDB 6055, São Sebastião, Araçá, coll. R. Buranelli, 10.ix.2013.

Distribution. Western Atlantic— Bermuda, Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea to Brazil (Fernando de Noronha, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina) (Provenzano 1959; Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1987; Rieger & Giraldi 1997; Rieger 1998; Melo 1999; Coelho-Filho 2006; Coelho et al. 2007; Felder et al. 2009).

Remarks. Molecular analysis revealed different color patterns observed in individuals of C. tibicen were to be intraspecific variation (Mandai et al. 2018a). In addition, a recent phylogeographic study (Mandai et al. 2018b) showed that its extensive western Atlantic distribution has a hiatus in the Amazon Delta (Brazilian states of Pará and Amapá). Indeed, genetic structure was detected, defining two distinct groups (North and South Atlantic Ocean), with no morphological distinction. Sequences accession numbers (GenBank): CCDB 769—16S (KT897493), COI (KT897527) (Mandai et al. 2018b).
