Description

Johnsonita iacinta Bálint, Boyer & Pyrcz, sp. n.

(Figs 7, 21D–F, 31)

Type material. CEP-MZUJ holotype female in good condition (right hindwing slightly damaged), with the following label: “ Amazonas, Molinopampa, XI.2002, J. Wojtusiak ” (white paper, printed) (CEP–MZUJ: female).

Paratypes, all (n=7, three dissections) from PERU: Amazonas, Molinopampa, Via Granada, 2965m, 4.VII.1998, T. Pyrcz & J. Wojtusiak (CEP – MZUJ: male; gen. prep. nos 808/Bálint; 375/ J. Lorenc); Amazonas, Environs de Molinopampa, XI.2000, B. Calderón (CB: female); Amazonas, Molinopampa, IX.2002, J. Wojtusiak (CEP – MZUJ: female, gen. prep. 376/ J. Lorenc); Amazonas, Mendoza, XI.2002, J. Wojtusiak (CEP – MZUJ: female); San Martín, Moyobamba–Nieva, Jorge Chavez, 1400–1600 m, V.2003, A. Tafur (HNHM: female); Pasco, Oxapampa, SE d’Oxapampa, La Antena, 2400–2600 m, 29.X.2004, P. Boyer (CB: female, gen. prep. 376/ 17.05.2020 / J. Lorenc); Cusco, Marcapata, 3200 m, 15.II.2005, J. Wojtusiak & T. Pyrcz (CEP – MZUJ: female); Pasco –Oxapampa, SE d’Oxapampa, La Antena, 2700 m, IV.2005, J. Böttger (CB: female).

Description. Wings. FW length: 13–15 mm (n=4, CEP–MZUJ specimens), FW apical area of costa and outer margin is straight resulting an acute apex; male dorsal wing surface structural colouration bright hyacinth blue; dorsal FW surface black border inner margin reaching the outer third of the vein M3; HW dorsal surface discal area structurally coloured; ventral wing surface medial pattern composed by light ruptive line supplemented distally with dark spots. Genitalia. Male could not be documented (for the reasons explained below). Female ductus with concave edges and minute lower plate, upper plate symmetrical with a widely sclerotized frame.

Diagnosis. The species is easily distinguished by the pointed forewing. Asomewhat similar wing shape is shared by J. turquisca but the two species are not sympatric and they have different dorsal colouration and ventral patterns. J. pardoa which occurs alongside J. iacinta, has also somewhat pointed FW apex but the outer margin is convex (in J. iacinta it is straight), the dorsal wing colouration is dark azure blue (in J. iacinta it is hyacinth blue), and possessing androconia (J. iacinta has no androconia).

Distribution. PERU (Amazonas, Pasco) (Fig. 31); spatial: recorded between 1400–2965m a.s.l; temporal: recorded from February, April, July, September and November.

Etymology. Named after the the dorsal wingsurface colouration of the male. The species name “iacinta” is freely formed by Latinising the word “Hyacinth” and treating it as a female noun in apposition.

Note. The only male specimen available was dissected but the genitalia was damaged. Therefore a female specimen became selected as holotype.
