Description

Paloniella Poppius, 1915

Paloniella Poppius, 1915: 76 (as new genus); Akingbohungbe 1996: 102–103 (review of European and African species); Kerzhner & Josifov 1999: 5 (catalogue); Schuh 2002 –2013 (online catalogue). Type species: Isometopus feanus Distant, 1904 from Burma, by original designation.

Letaba Hesse, 1947: 34 (as new genus), A homonym of Letaba Dyar, 1912 (Lepidoptera); synonymized by Akingbohungbe 1996: 102. Type species: Letaba bedfordi Hesse, 1947 from South Africa, by original designation.

Diagnosis. Recognised by the elongate oval to oval body in males and the strongly oval body in females, the strongly appressed head, the frons with a flange-like hood, the relatively small ocelli placed near the eyes on the vertex, widely separated by a distance greater than three times their diameter in males and greater than five times their diameter in females.

Distribution. Widely distributed in the Afrotropical Region. Also present in China (Fujian, Guangxi, Tibet), India, and Myanmar.

Note. Although McAtee & Malloch (1924, 1932) considered Paloniella a synonym of Isometopus, Akingbohungbe (1996) treated it a valid genus, an action we follow in this paper. Herczek (1993) treated Ren & Yang’s (1988) genus Paraletaba (type species: Paraletaba montana Ren & Yang, 1987 from China) as a subgenus of Paloniella.

Two species are known in India.
