Description

This lesson on Native American Law and Legal Sources was presented to all University of Wisconsin first-year law students as part of the Legal Research and Writing II course in February 2021.  It was initially developed and presented as part of the UW Law School's hosting and celebration of the “Our Shared Future Heritage Marker” in February 2020.

The lesson examines the following topics:

  • Wisconsin's First Nations of Wisconsin
  • Federal recognition of Indian tribes
  • Tribal sovereignty
  • Tribes’ relationship with the federal government
  • Jurisdictional Issues
  • Structure of tribal governments
  • Sources of Native American law

The lesson also introduces the Digital Publication of Tribal laws Pilot Project, a federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to make tribal law more accessible to all through the creation of a  free, federated tribal legal publishing ecosystem.
