Description

Culicoides neavei Austen, 1912

(Fig. 11a, b)

Chemical pigmentation (Fig. 11a). Light spots on a dark background. Pigment patterns with clearly defined boundaries. Cell r2, including distal part of C vein, dark. Light patch at the distal end of the sc cell, including part of C vein, passing down to the SC and R veins, and covering part of r1 cell, and completely covering the R-M crossvein; veins still clearly visible. Two pale spots in medial part of wing; the proximal one covers cubital and anal veins (CuA, A). Two light spots in the r3 cell; proximal one abuts with distal end of C vein and covers the wing edge; distal one approximately to wing apex. Two light spots in m1 and m2 cells. One light spot in the cua1 cell covering the edge of the wing. Three light spots in the anal cell; proximal one with less defined borders.

Interference patterns (Fig. 11b). Dominant colours: navy blue, purple. Structural colours in place of naturally occurring bright spots, pale yellow/whitish. Interference colours corresponding to the dark pigment on the wings in shades of blue and purple. Venation clearly marked.

Light pattern in pigmentation corresponds with WIP light areas, pigmented anterocostal portion distinctly differentiated in WIP colors.
