Anisopodus White 1855

Description

Anisopodus White, 1855

(Figs. 51–53)

Anisopodus White, 1855: 349 (replace name).

Anisopus Audinet-Serville, 1835: 30 (homonym of Anisopus Meigen, 1803).

Type species Anisopus arachnoides Audinet-Serville, 1835 (monotypy).

Leptoscelis Dejean, 1835: 145 (homonym of Leptoscelis Laporte, 1832).

Type-species Anisopus arachnoides Audinet-Serville, 1835 (only valid species originally included).

Diagnosis. Lateral tubercle of the prothorax situated on posterior third; elytra with centrobasal crest, with or without carinae; apex of the metafemora surpassing elytral apex, especially in males; metafemoral club not strongly enlarged; metatarsomere I longer than II–V together. This is a very problematic genus, including species that evidently do not agree with the characters of the type species of the genus. According to Nascimento et al. (2020): “Accordingly, any description or redescription must provide a good character or characters separating Anisopodus from Hyperplatys. While a complete and detailed revision of these two genera is not made, we believe that the following character set can be used to separate them:— Anisopodus: metafemora distinctly surpassing elytral apex in male (rarely not so); metafemoral club not strongly enlarged; metatarsomere I longer than II–V together;— Hyperplatys: metafemora not or slightly surpassing elytral apex in male; metafemoral club strongly enlarged; metatarsomere I not longer than II–V together.” Number of species currently included: 44.
