Description
Cerbera manghas Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 208. 1753.
"Habitat in Indiis ad aquas." RCN: 1707.
Lectotype (Huber in Abeywickrama, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 1(1): 18. 1973): Herb. Hermann 5: 70, No. 106 [icon] (BM).
Generitype of Cerbera Linnaeus.
Current name: Cerbera mangas L. (Apocynaceae).
Note: Cerbera manghas, with Herb. Linn. No. 298.2 (LINN) as the type, was proposed as conserved type of the genus by Jarvis (in Taxon 41: 560. 1992). However, the proposal was eventually ruled unnecessary by the General Committee (see Barrie, l.c. 55: 795-796. 2006 for a review of the history of this and related proposals). Huber’s (1973) type choice of a Hermann drawing, however, pre-dates that of 298.2 (LINN) by Leeuwenberg (in Jarvis, l.c. 41: 560. 1992) and becomes the correct choice with the failure of the conservation proposal.
