Description
Pistia stratiotes Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 963. 1753.
"Habitat in Asiae, Africae, Americae meridionalibus, natans." RCN: 6967.
Lectotype (Suresh & al. in Taxon 32: 127. 1983): [icon] " Kodda-pail " in Rheede, Hort. Malab. 11: 63, t. 32. 1692.
Generitype of Pistia Linnaeus.
Current name: Pistia stratiotes L. (Araceae).
Note: Bogner (in Leroy, Fl. Madagascar 31: 67. 1975) indicated 1072.1 (LINN) as type, but this choice was rejected by Suresh & al. (in Taxon 32: 127-128. 1983) on the grounds of conflict with the protologue. The material also appears to be a post-1753 addition to the herbarium, and not original material for the name.
