Description
Rhinanthus crista-galli Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 603. 1753.
"Habitat in Europae pratis." RCN: 4374.
Lectotype (Pennell in Monogr. Acad. Nat. Sci. Philadelphia 1: 491. 1935): Herb. Linn. No. 758.2 (LINN).
Generitype of Rhinanthus Linnaeus (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 166. 1929).
Current name: Rhinanthus crista-galli L. (Scrophulariaceae).
Note: This name has been treated as a nomen ambiguum by many authors (see Sell in Watsonia 6: 301. 1967; Bullock in Kew Bull. 23: 265. 1969 etc.), with R. minor L. (1756) often taken up in its place. However, to date, R. crista-galli has not been formally proposed for rejection.
