Description

Musa bihai Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 1043. 1753.

"Habitat in America calidiore." RCN: 1653.

Basionym of: Heliconia bihai (L.) L. (1771).

Neotype (Maas & De Rooij in Stoffers & Lindeman, Fl. Suriname 5(1): 399. 1979): Herb. Linn. No. 286.1 (LINN).

Current name: Heliconia bihai (L.) L. (Musaceae).

Note: Andersson (in Nordic J. Bot. 1: 769. 1981) gave an extensive review of the history of this name. The cited Plumier element leads to a generic illustration (t. 3) for Bihai which included what Plumier regarded as three different species, so the plate cannot be treated as original material for M. bihai. Andersson therefore designated a later Dahlberg collection (286.1 LINN) as a neotype, but Maas & De Rooij had previously treated the same collection as the type (accepted as a neotypification under Art. 9.8).
