Viola montana Linnaeus 1753

  • 1. Department of Botany, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London, UK

Description

Viola montana Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 2: 935. 1753.

"Habitat in Alpibus Lapponiae, Austriae, Baldo." RCN: 6774.

Lectotype (Nikitin in Bot. Zhurn. 73: 1536. 1988): Herb. Linn. No. 1052.13 (LINN).

Current name: Viola montana L. (Violaceae).

Note: See Wilmott (in J. Bot. 54: 257-262. 1916) for a discussion of the status of this name. However, no explicit choice of type was made. Treated as a nomen ambiguum by some authors, it has also been applied by others to a taxon in the V. canina L. group. However, Nikitin’s formal typification has made V. montana the earliest name for the taxon widely known as V. elatior Fr.
