Zammara tympanum

Description

Zammara tympanum (Fabricius, 1803)

Tettigonia tympanum Fabricius 1803: 40. (Brazil)

REMARKS. Goemans (2016) determined that specimens of Z. tympanum reported from Central America and northern South America were generally misidentifications of Z. nigriplaga. Both species possess bronzed fore wings and the lack of a type specimen for Z. tympanum may have led early authors to cite specimens as Z. tympanum. Subsequent authors, including myself, perpetuated this concept of the species as inhabiting Central America (see summary in Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2013). The reference to the species by Jacobi (1951) probably reference Z. hertha, the only described species of Zammara currently known to inhabit Peru (Goemans 2016), so Z. tympanum is removed from the Peruvian cicada fauna.

DISTRIBUTION. Goemans (2016) reduced the known range of the species significantly to include southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina.
