Solasteridae

Description

SOLASTERIDAE

The systematics of Atlantic coast Solaster spp., as summarized by Clark and Downey (1992) are in need of revision with many species showing overlapping character limits. The widely occurring Solaster endeca for example, varies from Solaster earlii on the basis of only a few furrow and subambulacral spine count differences as well as the R/ r ratio. Without launching into a full revision, which is beyond the scope of the work herein, specimen variation of Atlantic Solaster spp. suggests that the taxonomic limits of these species are more tenuous than historical accounts have suggested.
