Photonics4All Bookmark Microscopy (English)

  • 1. Delft University of Technology

Description

The purpose of the bookmarks for the project Photonics4All is to increase the public awareness of photonics and especially of the technological advances of photonics which have changed and improved everyday life (basic technology introduction).

Do cells have colors?

These photos are taken by fluorescence microscope. Fluorescent matter will emit light when absorbing light with lower wavelength. Scientists make them into fluorescent stains, which can attach to the molecules in the cells. In this way, specific structures in the cells can be highlighted, and colorful photos are made. In 2014, "the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy" also received the Nobel Prize of Chemistry. In the future we will be able to understand the complicated running mechanism of the cells and maybe solve the puzzle of life.
All thanks to the progress of Photonics!
