Description

Pseudastenus schubarti Irmler, sp. nov.

Fig. 45, 54

Material examined. Holotype. Male, dissected, deposited in INPA, labeled as holotype by Irmler. “ Rio de Janeiro, GB, Floresta da Tijuca, 20.VIII.1958, leg. H. Schubart. Paratypes. 1 male depositied in UIC. labeled as paratype by Irmler. Rio de Janeiro, GB, Sumaré, 4.10.1958, leg. H. Schubart; 1 male deposited in UIC. Brazil: Rio de Janeiro, Floresta de Tijuca (- 22.88 S, - 43.11 W), 20.8.1958, leg. H. Schubart; 2 females deposited in UIC. Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Sumaré (- 22.88 S, - 43.11 W), 4.10.1958, leg H. Schubart.

Diagnosis. Pseudastenus schubarti can be separated from P. ribeirocostae, that has also reduced hind wings and short eyes, by the lighter coloration and even shorter eyes. The apical sclerites of aedeagus are more slender than those of P. ribeirocostae (Fig. 54)

Description. Body length: 3.31 mm. Coloration: head and elytra light brown; pronotum slightly lighter brown, nearly yellow; abdomen darker brown; first segment colored as elytra; following segments darker; darkened posteriad; legs and antennae yellow. Head 0.45 mm long, 0.46 mm wide; widest close to posterior angles; posterior angles nearly rectangular; eyes small, only 0,2 times as long as total length of head and 0.4 times as long as postocular length; posterior central edge with inconspicuous depression in front of neck, with dense microtuberculate punctation and loose pubescence laterally. Pronotum 0.45 mm long, 0.45 mm wide; widest close to anterior angles; anterior margin slightly curved to obtuse anterior angles; sides conspicuously convergent to posterior angles; posterior margin straight; posterior margin only 0.70 times as wide as maximum width. Elytra 0.42 mm long, 0.30 mm wide; widest close to posterior angles; sides convergent to humeral angles; humeral angles obtuse and inconspicuous; hind wings reduced; posterior margin semi-circular with incision at suture; suture 0.8 times as long as total length; punctures slightly larger than on head and pronotum and pubescence longer; posterior margin with fringe of short dark setae. Abdomen with less deep microtuberculate punctation than fore-body but with longer pubescence pointing posteriad. Aedeagus 0.49 mm long; subparallel; 3.76 times as long as wide; slightly constricted in front of apex; sclerites 0.05 mm long; acute at apex and without hooks (Fig. 54).

Etymology. The name of the species honors Dr. Herbert Schubart, the former director of the INPA, Manaus, who assigned his staphylinid collection to my disposal in 1976 for further study.

Geographical records. P. schubarti was collected in the region of the city of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).

Biological notes. No further information is available about the ecology of the species.
