COMMUNICATIVE TASK BASED TEACHING GRAMMAR

Description

Modernization of English language teaching nowadays largely depends on its spread as a language of international communication and its functioning as a mechanism for performing certain professional or personal tasks. Accordingly, traditional language classes based on gap-filling exercises don’t meet the challenges of modern education any more. Nowadays the emphasis is laid on creating a meaningful process of studying when students understand the communicative function of a grammatical pattern and feel its practical significance.

The purpose of this article is to offer practical ways of using the method of communicative tasks to master grammar at higher educational establishments in the classes of practical grammar or English language practice. The aforementioned method provides the utterances with communicative orientation and contains the creative component as a necessary element, and thus increases the students' motivation to learn and use the language in the given situations.

Methodology. The content of the article is based on the analysis of current trends in foreign languages teaching, in particular, recommendations on the use of the above-mentioned method of communicative tasks for teaching a foreign language in general, as well as on the practical experience of the authors in using it specifically for teaching and practicing grammatical material.

The scientific novelty of this work is proved by the fact that for the first time in the national methodology not only the possibility of teaching grammar through the method of communicative tasks has been considered, but also its effectiveness and expediency have been confirmed practically. The examples of certain communicative tasks which are used by some Ukrainian teachers in Grammar lessons at tertiary Universities are supplied.

It is concluded that creative communicative-oriented tasks really demonstrate to students the importance of learning grammatical structures for their further communication in real life and takes the acquisition of grammar to a new level. In addition, the necessity of further study of the possibility to use this method in the classes of English for specific purposes has been stated, taking into account the peculiarities of this course.
