GDPR Compliance and Data Management Planning – An Integrated Approach

  • 1. NSD - Norwegian Centre for Research Data

Description

This presentation will focus on our new cooperation between the data curation unit and the data protection unit.

Researchers are experiencing increased demands from authorities and financers both in terms of open science and data protection (e.g. GDPR). Horizon 2020 has launched a pilot to maximize access to research data and participating projects have to develop a Data Management Plan (DMP).

Privacy and open science may be understood as conflicting considerations. However, data protection is a prerequisite for collecting, analyzing, archiving and sharing data. In order to share data while maintaining the privacy of the research participants, expertise in both areas is required.

NSD is a centre for research data with expertise on data protection. We are in the process of implementing new systems both technically and organizationally which will help researchers accommodate demands with the smallest effort necessary: They can fill out a DMP and document their processing of personal data through the same interface. The aim of this integrated approach is to consider whether research data falls within the remit of GDPR, and guide the researcher in taking the necessary steps to meet its requirements and enable FAIR data sharing.
