Description

The aim of this briefing paper is to review the benefits of using Facebook; the social network site, from the aspect of exploiting its function to support the educational mission. Specifically, a closer observation was made to see how Facebook pages could be used to help improve students" writing skills in teaching and learning English. The paper also provides information regarding one particular
“hot potato”, namely the befriending of students, and to explore tertiary learners" attitudes when using Facebook to help them improve their English, especially their writing skills. A group of ten first-year English- majored students were chosen to give their response on the issue and serve as a pilot experiment. Follow this, a proposal of some pre-designed writing activities is offered to
writing teachers, as well as those who have an interest in this field, to exploit the benefit of technology in terms of improving their students" writing skills. Finally, some anticipated problems are drawn out for both teachers and students.
