ARTICULATION ENTRE ÉTUDE DE LA LANGUE ET ÉTUDE DE LA LITTÉRATURE DANS LES MANUELS DE FLE / ARTICULATION BETWEEN LANGUAGE STUDY AND STUDY OF LITERATURE IN TEXTBOOKS OF FRENCH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

La présente contribution s’appuie sur l’analyse de cinq manuels de français langue étrangère qui tentent d’articuler l’étude de la langue à l’étude des textes littéraires, notamment dans les domaines de la grammaire et du lexique. Notre travail est fondé sur le concept didactique d’articulation et la visée esthétique qui attribue à la littérature le statut d’œuvre d’art. L’analyse, qui adopte une approche méthodique mixte, révèle que le traitement des phénomènes langagiers n’est pas souvent compatible avec les spécificités du texte littéraire. Cette observation pose le problème de la pertinence des textes choisis puisque ceux-ci ne sont presque jamais exploités comme textes littéraires. Nous recommandons alors aux enseignants de compléter leur usage des manuels en accordant une meilleure importance à la dimension esthétique lorsque ceux-ci proposent des activités langagières à partir des textes littéraires.

The present study examines five textbooks for learners of French as a foreign language in which the teaching of language is linked to the teaching of literature, particularly in the areas of grammar and vocabulary. This study is based on the didactic concept of articulation and the aesthetic dimension of literature which makes it an art work. The analysis, which employs the mixed approach, showed that the activities proposed on language items are often not compatible with the distinctive characteristics of the literary text. This observation brings into question the relevance of the texts used since they are nearly always not used as literary tests. We therefore recommend that teachers complement the use of the textbooks by placing a better emphasis on the aesthetic dimension when these manuals propose language based activities on literary texts.
