Disentangling galaxy formation through radial gradients
Description
Studies of local galaxies suggest that both star-forming and quiescent galaxies formed in an inside-out fashion. Local stellar metallicity encodes past information on the stellar assembly, and it appears to correlate best with the local escape velocity. We present the first study of spatially resolved Lick indices at redshift ~1, using 700 galaxies from the LEGA-C Survey. We show: 1) an empirical correlation between Lick index strenght and escape velocity, a relation that is both global and local 2) despite both inside-out and outside-in formation channels being present, the overall majority of galaxies is consistent with the first formation mechanism.
