Discovering Data: Practices of Data Search and Reuse

Description
How do users discover, make sense of, and (re)use research data that they do not create themselves? How are these practices of data search related to and contingent upon community norms, infrastructures and data supplies? While one of the promises driving both data sharing and policy development is that data can and will be discovered and reused, exactly how researchers engage in data discovery remains under-explored. This poster summarizes findings from semi-structured interviews and a recent survey examining the data needs, discovery strategies, and sensemaking practices employed by data seekers across disciplinary domains.
