Description

Micro-grids together with energy storage systems play an important role for load shifting, power smoothing, reducing power
supply costs, increasing the penetration of photovoltaics, and increasing economic benefits. This paper investigated the benefits of
introducing micro-grid with energy storage in a residential and a commercial/industrial building located in Sweden. The energy
storage considered in this study is an electrochemical energy storage system. This study focused on using the energy storage system for carrying out peak shaving. Starting from the frequency distribution analysis of the investigated load profiles, the results show that simply passing from the current scenario to the micro-grid scenario can lead to annual cost reduction due to the related synergies for the residential building. The electrochemical energy storage system can lead to further economic benefits when applied for reducing the peak power consumption for the residential building. The studied commercial/industrial building, the implementation of a micro-grid lead to an increased annual cost for the grid connection. Similarly, performing peak shaving increases the annual cost mainly due to the high annualized cost of battery.
