- Coelho (1964) recorded P. rugimanus from the northeastern Brazilian coast (Pina and Piedade, Pernambuco, around 8°S) based on the specimens captured in depths between 2 and 5 m, on sandstone reefs and coral patches. However, no voucher specimens remain to confirm the record. After this report, Veloso & Melo (1993) reported one female from Amapa (around 04°S) and three males from Paraiba (around 06°S) and attributed their specimens to P. rugimanus. The specimens from Amapa and Paraiba were re-examined in the present study and they are instead referred to P. coelhoi sp. nov. (from Amapa) and P. ackleianus (from Paraiba). Melo (1999) repeated the record of P. rugimanus in the Brazilian fauna, but with no voucher specimens. The specimen in Melo's (1999) illustration (fig. 164) closely resembles P. coelhoi sp. nov.; it is well possible that he has used one of the specimens from Amapa (presently referred to P. coelhoi sp. nov.) studied by Melo & Veloso (1993). The record of P. rugimanus by Coelho's et al. (2007) from northeastern Brazil is based on that by Coelho (1964). Although Ferreira & Melo (2016) also reported P. rugimanus from Brazil, their illustrated specimen is a male of the species from South Carolina, United States.
