What is a data management plan?

  • 1. University of Florida

Description

A UF doctoral fellow tasked with giving a presentation on data management discovered the UF George A. Smathers Libraries Academic Research Consulting & Services (ARCS) Data Management via http://arcs.uflib.ufl.edu/ and invited the DMCWG to give a data management presentation to researchers, scientists, and staff at the UF Institute on Aging on 20190215. This revised and updated "What is a Data Management Plan?" presentation introduced the researchers to the OAIS and DCC Curation Lifecycle Models which are commonly known within the library and information science communities of practice. Coupled with select real data management and data request examples from UF researchers integrated during the talk and briefly included in this presentation, the researchers in attendance asked questions on metadata, data transfer agreements, DMP, and enjoyed the explanation of SIP, AIP, and DIP of the OAIS functional entity illustration on slide 6, the levels of data curation (Lord, 2003) on slide 7, and the high-level components of the DCC Curation Lifecycle Model on slide 8. It was noted from this presentation that the inclusion of the OAIS model and DCC Curation Lifecycle Model aligned with current efforts to provide data management support were effective during the lecture.

Notes

The Data Management and Curation Working Group (DMCWG) helped develop the A Data Management Plan (DMP) Process Example diagram on slide 9. The ARCS group developed the mechanism for outreach leading to the invitation for this presentation.
