Drift capacity models for modern URM walls for EC8 Part 1

  • 1. EPFL

Description

This objective of this report was to put forward drift capacity models for the revised Eurocode 8, Part 1 (EC8-Part 1). For this purpose, it reviews the data available on quasi-static cyclic tests on masonry walls in the recently assembled European database for URM walls. Based on this review, it proposes two simple drift capacity models. Both models account for the unit typology. In addition, Model 1 accounts for the failure mode and follows therefore the traditional form for URM drift capacity models. Unlike the current drift capacity model in the current EC8-Part 3 [2], it introduces an axial load ratio limit of 0.3. Walls subjected to higher ALR should be avoided; if this is not possible, it should be assumed that they have only one third of the drift capacity of walls with ALR ≤ 0.3. Note that the idea of an ALR-limit is already included in the German national annex to Eurocode 8 [38] for walls failing in shear. It limits the SD drift capacity of 0.4%, which is specified in the current EC8-Part 3, to walls with an ALR ≤ 0.15. For walls with a larger ALR, the drift capacity is reduced to 0.3%.

All files, from the extraction of the data from the data bases to the files for plotting the figures are publicly shared. A file register describing the content of the files is included at the end of each chapter of the report.
