The stuttering boy.

Creators

Description

Discusses the sex limitations of stuttering. Stuttering, and to a less extent stammering is peculiarly a masculine derangement, rarely found in girls. Presents two facts related to the cause of stammering - (1) the stammering dates, from the time when the boy first went to school, or began first to associate with other boys and (2) the stammerer encountered difficulty with words beginning with one of a small group of sounds - the sounds with which some obscene words used by boys begin. Views, the reason behind absence of stuttering in girls, as being due to the absence of fear in girls of revealing 'tabu' vocabulary. Suggests, the avoidance of fear-stimulus, as the cure for stuttering. Emphasizes the role of parents in finding out and talking with the boys about obscene and objectional terms that they use, on commencement of stuttering.
