Technical progress across the CCS chain and its relevance for future business models
Description
The large-scale deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) requires coordinated advances in the transport and storage of CO₂, environmental assurance and institutional conditions that enable cross-border infrastructure. The COREu (CO₂ Routes Across Europe) project, funded under Horizon Europe, is developing open-access, transnational CO₂ transport and storage routes in Greece, the Czech Republic, Poland and Ukraine, with the aim of supporting CCS deployment in Central and Eastern Europe and beyond. COREu unites a large consortium of European partners to overcome the technical, regulatory, environmental and socio-economic challenges posed by the development of new CO₂ transport and storage networks and hubs. The project aims to facilitate new CCS routes connecting emitters with geological storage sites, thereby improving the feasibility and economic rationale for regional CCS deployment. Alongside its technical achievements, COREu is developing business models based on the project's key exploitable results (KER) to contribute to the economic foundations of CCS deployment.
