D4.2 - Evaluation of first round of Demonstrations

This deliverable evaluates the first round of demonstrations conducted across five European cities—Athens, Barcelona, Ispra, Flanders, and Oxfordshire—each testing innovative logistics approaches and technologies developed by GREEN-LOG and tailored to the local urban and peri-urban contexts.
The evaluation methodology utilized a mixed approach, including pre- and post-demonstration questionnaires, a continuous monitoring tool, and specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to capture the effectiveness of implemented solutions. Major solutions demonstrated included multimodal transport integration, autonomous delivery robots, moveable consolidation hubs, mobile delivery hubs, smart lockers, and a Logistic-as-a-Service (LaaS) platform.
Athen’s pilot employed simulations to compare shared versus independent last-mile deliveries, significantly reducing travel distance and CO₂ emissions through shared electric vehicle operations and smart lockers. Barcelona focused on multimodal solutions integrating public transport and cargo bikes, alongside testing autonomous delivery robots within a railway station environment. Despite some challenges in navigation, robotic solutions proved viable for indoor logistics operations. In Ispra, meal deliveries via combined cargo bikes and autonomous droids highlighted strong user acceptance and satisfaction despite minimal improvement in delivery times. Flanders tested consumer behaviour through LaaS, achieving considerable consolidation of deliveries and indicating positive user acceptance of sustainable logistics methods. Ghent and Leuven, facing initial implementation challenges, redirected their approaches to data-driven insights and stakeholder engagement, preparing effectively for the subsequent round of demonstrations. Oxfordshire demonstrated robust logistics solutions, including predictive demand tools, optimized routing services, mobile and moveable consolidation hubs. The Mobile Delivery Hub notably improved courier efficiency by significantly reducing reloading times and journeys, while the Moveable Consolidation Hub demonstrated strong potential for parcel consolidation and emissions reduction.
Overall, GREEN-LOG’s first-round demonstrations provided useful insights on the effectiveness of the developed solutions, confirming their potential scalability and operational feasibility. The identified challenges and the feedback provided by the relevant stakeholders/actors are used for the refinement of the use cases and as well as the further development and refinement of the GREEN-LOG solutions for the second round of demonstrations.
