Description

This is a dataset of organ recordings and room acoustic measurements of St. Jakobus Church, Ilmenau, Thuringia, Germany (N 50.685810219288456, E 10.915233969794345).

For ease of reference and use, the dataset has been divided into multiple parts:

Measurement Overview.jpg shows a sketch of the measurement setup, including all microphone and speaker positions, while Photo Collage.pdf provides some photos.

The room acoustic measurements were conducted using loudspeakers, omnidirectional microphones, and microphone arrays. Three loudspeakers weere placed near the organ pipes and one close to the altar. The nine omnidirectional microphones weere placed in and around the organ, suspended from the upper galleries and on the ground floor. With this Setup, omnidirectional Room Impulse Responses (RIRs) where measured and are available as Part 1 of the dataset.

The same microphone Setup was used for the recordings of tones from the organ pipes themselfes. Part 3 contains recordings of combinations of single C and F tones for selected stops. Part 4 is a collection of full organ pieces played on the same stops.

Part 2 of the dataset was recorded using an open 7-piece microphone array, with the central microphone being an omnidirectional capsule identical to those used in the other recordings. Thus, it provides not only the omnidirectional RIR of the central microphone, but also information about the spatial distribution of the incoming sound waves. This information can be used with the Spatial Decomposition Method for binaural rendering or other means of spatial audio playback. The array was placed in 37 positions on the ground floor by a robot and in 6 positions in the galleries manually. The back of the church can be separated by a movable glass wall, which was utilized for some of the measurements.

The following tables provide an overview of the equipment used and the respective dataset. Further details are provided in the descriptions of the individual data sets.
