Transforming Municipalities: The Handbook for Urban CCUS Strategies
Authors/Creators
Description
Urban areas account for over 70% of global carbon emissions, making their reduction critical in the fight against climate change. Although emission reduction efforts primarily focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable transportation, Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) remains underutilised in municipalities - despite its potential to mitigate emissions from hard-to-abate industries. This Handbook provides an overview of the role of municipalities in facilitating CCUS adoption, as well as in highlighting challenges, opportunities, and best practices from municipalities and industry stakeholders.
Through surveys, interviews, and workshops, key insights were gathered from municipal representatives, technical experts, and industrial actors involved in CCUS projects. The Handbook provides insights into the experience of front-runner municipalities that have already taken the first steps in leveraging the potential of CCUS for their Net Zero ambitions, an overview of cost calculations, and funding opportunities for CCUS projects.
