EURAD-2 Management strategies for small amounts of waste in SIMS

The ASTRA Work Package in EURAD-2 assesses alternative radioactive waste management strategies for both small and large programmes, showing that while cost-effective shared solutions and harmonised approaches are especially important for small inventories, broader European cooperation on disposal, safety assessment, governance, and knowledge exchange is both technically feasible and strategically necessary.
The milestone report shows that ASTRA Tasks 5.1 and 5.2 have identified the most urgent radioactive waste management challenges, confirmed the value of targeted live discussion forums and shared learning between SIMS and LIMS programmes, and demonstrated that future progress will depend on cost-effective shared solutions, harmonised methodologies, and stronger European cooperation on technical, regulatory, and governance issues.
