Report on the Tools for NBS Design and Implementation

Description

The general agenda of COEVOLVERS is to explore conceptual, theoretical and practical pathways to creating more resilient and inclusive communities of human and non-human beings. Work package 2 is the arena where these three aspects are reflected as an integrated package, while adopting a strategic perspective: COEVOLVERS as a project is not just describing and diagnosing coevolutionary phenomena for immediate action on the ground, but is part and parcel of a coevolutionary process that unfolds in the LLs and that extends the period of formal project implementation. In other words, concepts, theories and practices coevolve in the ongoing research. In its focus on conceptual and theoretical work, WP 2 takes a strategic stance towards practices: In which sense can we interpret current practices as harbingers of future socioecological transformations and innovations?
Deliverable 2.3. explores how the coevolutionary approach is implemented in LL practices, and how this practice informs theory development. Other COEVOLVERS deliverables provide detailed accounts of Living Lab (LL) practices and experiences, including the presentation of tools of design and implementation. This complementary WP2 report completes a "hop, step, and jump" movement, beginning with an outline of coevolutionary theory in D.2.1, progressing to its methodological implications in D.2.2, and now examining LL practices. Throughout this process, we maintain a strong focus on theory development, which is central to WP2. The main distinction from previous applications of theory is that we identify a set of key medium-level theoretical concepts that highlight common threads across LLs while remaining relevant to practical applications. These concepts are the trays by which we organise the toolbox of NBS design and implementation, with the tools being those actually used in LLs (in D.2.2., we also presented many others that can be deduced from the general theoretical framework).
