Description

This script implements segmentwise polynomial fitting on user-defined segments of surface elevation data or data obtained from other signals. The code was developed to provide accurate measurements of Lagrangian acceleration near the wave crests and all along the wave and to facilitate the detection and characterization of breaking wave behavior through analysis of the second derivative of the fitted curves.  This version updates the previous segment_polyfit_method.m implementation and this version corresponds to the methodology presented in the paper "Lagrangian acceleration as a diagnostic for wave breaking in the nearshore zone," accepted in Journal of Geophysical Research – Oceans (February 2026). Detailed instructions and an overview of the method are provided in the Supplementary Material that can be found in the online version of this article.
