Description

This  document  describes  the  hardware  proof  of  concept  system  developed  for  the
ODISSEE project, based on primarily European digital IP. The goal of the hardware proof
of concept is to demonstrate the ability to both design and utilise a cost-effective and
suitable  hardware  system  for  both  radio  astronomy  and  high-energy  physics
applications that is both fit for purpose and efficient compared to the current state of
the art.

In  this  document  we  present  the  technical  design  and  description  of  the  proof-of-
concept  hardware  for  the  ODISSEE  project.  In  addition  the  the  above  mentioned
experimental components based on European digital IP, this document details the small-
scale  experimental  compute  resources  available  through  partner  infrastructures,
including those hosted through SLICES-RI, SLICES-FR, Surf and CERN. Finally scale-
out  pre-exascale  and  exascale  resources  available  through  the  project  are  also
mentioned.

This  document  is  written  early  on  in  the  project,  and  therefore  describes  a  concept
rather than a fully finalized prototype. Furthermore, this document describes some of
the advanced state-of-the art systems available in the project that can be used as a
baseline to compare our solution against. Since one of the key performance indicators
defined for this project is sustainability, we also describe the ways we can measure
consumed energy for a particular infrastructure, system, component or application.
