Description
In the Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve, Willow (Salix spp.) and Elder (Sambucus nigra) act as critical ecological anchors within the reedbed habitat. These woody vegetation serve as essential forage for large herbivores like red deer (Cervus elephus). As red deer browse the nutrient-right foliage and strip bark, they naturally prune the vegetation to maintain the diversity in the nature reserve. However, Manually mapping those woody vegetations across extensive and often inaccessible reedbed is challenging and time-consuming. Airborne laser scanning offers a robust alternative, capable of capturing complex vegetation structure in the form of dense 3D point clouds. This repository documents a dataset of woody vegetation, primarily willow and elder, extracted from airborne LiDAR data (AHN4) to support the monitoring of these dynamic wetland ecosystems.
