The Carpentries Strategic Plan for 2026-2028

Description

The Carpentries empowers a diverse global community by equipping individuals with essential data and computational skills. We promote efficient, open, and reproducible research practices. By fostering collaborative development of openly available lessons and research-informed teaching methods, we build an inclusive network of practitioners and advocates who emphasise the critical role of software and data in advancing research.

Our vision is to be the leading inclusive community teaching data and coding skills.

By the end of Financial Year 2028, The Carpentries has further strengthened its financial resilience and global scalability, supported by a trusted and evolving
curriculum portfolio that reflects emerging research practices. Success is an organisation that is sustainable, adaptive, and community-led, with clear pathways for
growth, leadership, and impact across regions.

The 2026–2028 Strategic Plan is a bridge plan designed to maintain momentum while positioning the organisation for long-term sustainability and future strategic planning. Guided by our mission to empower a diverse global community with essential data and computational skills, this plan focuses on four priorities:

  1. advancing curriculum in emerging areas such as research software engineering and artificial intelligence;
  2. establishing a flexible and sustainable revenue framework;
  3. developing a community scalability model to support equitable growth; and
  4. empowering subcommunity leaders as multilingual advocates for The Carpentries mission and programming.

Together, these priorities strengthen The Carpentries’ foundation, support equitable global participation, and ensure continued relevance in a rapidly evolving research and education landscape
