Poster for 14th International SedNetConference - Reconstruction of historical events by studying radionuclides and chemical concentrations in a sediment core at North Cretan deep basin, Greece

Description

Poster presented at the 14th International SedNetConference, 6–10 October 2025 in Madrid, Spain.

This study presents the analysis of a 31 cm sediment core from the northern Cretan Basin (1500 m depth) to determine radioactivity levels and sedimentation rate. Radiodating was performed using 210Pb and 137Cs models, with the 1650 AD Kolumbo volcano eruption serving as a chronological marker. Carbon and mercury analyses were conducted to investigate the tephra layer, while discriminant analysis based on radionuclide activity provided insights into sediment composition and grain-size predominance.
