Qualification of neutron irradiated SiPMs at different temperatures
Description
This deliverable (D8.3) reports on the qualification of neutron-irradiated Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) for use in Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) and Time-of-Flight (TOF) detectors. Irradiation campaigns at JSI TRIGA and INFN LNL, together with AIDAinnova FBK studies, show that dark count rates rise sharply with fluence but can be managed by cooling—down to −100 °C at 10¹² neq/cm² and liquid nitrogen at 10¹³ neq/cm². FBK NUV-HD-RH SiPMs show the best tolerance, supporting their use in HL-LHC and Belle II upgrades. The deliverable defines operational envelopes and future work on annealing, cryogenic systems, and new radiation-hard designs.
