Designing for ethics - the approach in PRESENCE

This presentation was part of the session 'Ethical Virtual Worlds' at the NEM summit (Berin, 2025). In it, we describe the 'Guidance ethics approach' and how it was implemented as part of the Human Centered Design framework in the PRESENCE project. The presentation gives insight in how the guidance ethics approach helped define ethical concerns and mitigation strategies, leading to clear and concrete actions to take at the level of technology, user and environment. Finaly the presentation also highlights the sensitivities and focal points to take into account, because guidance ethics research might complement HCD, in some aspects it requires different skills, and specifc preparation.
